Sleep on horseback,
The far moon in a continuing dream,
Steam of roasting tea.

Spring departs.
Birds cry
Fishes' eyes are filled with tears

Summer zashiki
Make move and enter
The mountain and the garden.
*zashiki: Japanese-style room covered with tatamis and open to the garden.

What luck!
The southern valley
Make snow fragrant.

A autumn wind
More white
Than the rocks in the rocky mountain.

From all directions
Winds bring petals of cherry
Into the grebe lake.

Even a wild boar
With all other things
Blew in this storm.

The crescent lights
The misty ground.
Buckwheat flowers.

Bush clover in blossom waves
Without spilling
A drop of dew.

Life consists of very small things.

Life consists of very small things.

So if you become interested in so-called

big things, you will be missing life.

Life consists in sipping a cup of tea, in

gossiping with a friend;going for a morning

walk, not going anywhere in particular, just

for a walk no goal, no end, from any point

You can turn back; cooking food for someone

you love; cooking food for yourself, because

you love your body too;washing your

clothes, cleaning the floor, watering the

gardens-these small things, very small things

-saying hello to a stranger, which was not

needed at all because there was no question

of any business with the stranger.

The man who can say hello to a stranger

can also say hello to a flower, can also say

hello to a tree, can sing s song to the birds

The sun is rising; if you think about it you miss it,

because while you are thinking about it,

you are going away from
it.

In thinking you can move miles away,

and thoughts go faster than any
thing possible,

Thinking becomes a veil on the
eyes.

It gives its own color, its own
idea to the reality.

It does not allow
reality to reach you.

It imposes itself upon
reality; it is a deviation from reality.

Seeing is a totally different process;

in 1922 for his insterest in psychic phenomena.
